On the river, we had to look out for each other, beyond our own boats.  Getting down the river safely (always the top priority), required that we all work together - even outside our outfit. “Competitors” became partners, and the complexity of the task at hand forced an interconnected system to work together in harmony so that everyone reached our goals (hardship and injury on the river was bad for everyone).  You can imagine the amount of planning, communication, coordination, and alignment required to keep us flowing as a separate yet interconnected chain down the river.
